Google is bringing Gemini-powered natural-language analysis to spreadsheets connected to BigQuery, letting eligible users ask questions about warehouse data inside Google Sheets. The October 19 announcement says the feature can query the full connected dataset in BigQuery, rather than only rows currently visible in the spreadsheet.
Users can ask questions, compare results with follow-ups or request a dashboard. Google says Gemini shows a plan for review and can create a tab with connected pivot tables, charts and formulas that refresh on a schedule.
Connected Sheets is the bridge
The feature requires a spreadsheet connected to BigQuery through Connected Sheets. The Workspace update says users need permission to query the connected data. It lists availability for specified Business and Enterprise plans, Google AI Pro and Ultra, Google AI Pro for Education, and AI Expanded Access. Rollout began October 19 and could take up to 15 days.
Google’s Connected Sheets documentation explains that Sheets can access and analyze BigQuery data without importing the full dataset into the spreadsheet. Permissions and data-source configuration therefore remain central to access.
Check the analysis before using it
Natural-language requests can be ambiguous. Users should check query logic, filters, source data and totals before relying on generated charts or summaries.
The update connects Gemini with an existing warehouse workflow. Google says the feature is on by default and has no admin control to turn it off; access depends on a supported account and permission to query the data. Organizations may want to account for those details when deciding how the workflow fits their spreadsheet practices.
